The Elevator

You step into the warm glow of the building, the sounds of the town disappear behind you with a soft sigh. All that’s left is the gentle hum of electric lights. The grey doors slide shut to let you know that this is a safe space. You press the ornate button to the side of the elevator, and the machinery chugs to life. You see the arrow returning to the ground floor above the doors.

You notice that to the left of the elevator is a community board with just two notes, set inside a clear plastic frame –

The first: “What’s up party people! We’ve been awake for FAR too long, and have been having FAR too much fun! But now isn’t the time to stop! The next track is queued and we’ll be taking requests until the sun comes up… do you dance? Can you boogie? Know any cute French guys? We’re on the hunt for the head nodders, the swing dancers & the badass ravers! I made snacks! Bring soda! Hop in the elevator and press floor 51. Love ya!”

The second note, a much simpler hand-written affair, simply reads: “Where the ocean becomes the sky, is where the dreamers be… I’ve an ocean behind these eyes, where my mind swims free… loose your mind. Floor 99.”

… Floor 99!? How big IS this building? But before you can even comprehend this question, the elevator chimes and its doors slide open. You step inside.

There are just three buttons in this elevator – 0, 51 & 99. What takes your fancy?

Press number 51
